Hey everyone, I recently lost a cat hoodie at school. I can't find a picture of it clearly showing what it looks like, but it has a grey cat head and one eye is yellow and the other one is blue. If you know someone who may have it or if you have seen it, please return it to me.

Cheesy warning: the sweater means a lot to me because my boyfriend gave it to me.

PLEASE keep an eye out for it! Thank you!!

Save the Date - Thursday, April 27 - Students, parents, siblings, PH Staff and their families are all invited!

"ACT4E was founded in 2009 when we finally decided instead of talking about it, we wanted to BE ABOUT IT. We started by going to a local park and providing hot-meals to the homeless during Thanksgiving time, feeding more than 50 homeless individuals. As the years have continued we have been able to go from not only just serving meals but also providing clothing, jackets, blankets, beanies and hygiene items to more than 150 individuals in need in our community. Every year we do several different events to help those in need. From a pancake breakfast, to summer BBQ's at homeless encampments, Easter egg hunts and baskets for women and children in battered women's shelters and of course our yearly big winter event and taco bar. We also adopt a homeless family each year since 2011 helping give them shelter, a holiday meal and presents. This past year we adopted a young couple 24 and 22 with a baby 7 months. With diligent efforts we are now helping this young family move into housing and finally out of living out of their car and hotels. This would not all be possible without the generous donations we receive yearly towards our cause. Our hopes for the future are to be able to expand our services to our local homeless communities and continue to remind them that they are loved, there is hope, and they are not forgotten."

  • Actricia Barrieau finished high school in 1999 (Homeschooled due to health issues)
  • Carrie Barrieau graduated 2001
  • Tamra Gaspar (Barrieau) graduated 2003 (Married to PH Grad Eric Gaspar)
  • Ernie Barrieau graduated 2007

Hey Pirates,

The world may seem a little crazy, but PHHS is doing its part to bring joy to our community with events such as hosting the South Bay High School Theatre Competition on Friday, February 10th from 7pm to 9:30pm in our Lbuilding/Theatre.

This event will bring together theatre students from various south bay high schools to compete in monologues, duets, group scenes and musical theatre selections. The top three in each category will perform on our stage from 7pm to 9pm to determine 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. Students will also perform improvisational games.

All PHHS staff members can enjoy up to 2 free tickets to this event by simply emailing me at woodsa@esuhsd.org

See the attached flyer for more information and thanks Pirates.

Hey PHHS! I recently lost my backpack (which, of course, has my school items in it). It is a black North Face backpack and it contains a light gray jacket and a pair of jeans. It also has 4 folders of different colors and contains important notes and assignments that my classes require. It was lost inside the Boys' Locker room. If you find it, please return it to F-10 (Mr. Crum's room) and I will give you $25 as a reward. It has a big amount of sentimental value to me as it was given to me by my parents as a gift on my birthday. Thank you for your time.

NOISES OFF

Written by Michael Frayn
Produced by special arrangement with Samuel French
November 9 –12, 2016

Noises Off is a British farce  which provides humorous insight into the onstage and offstage challenges of producing a play. What’s a farce? Noises Off is a superb example: a high-energy comedic romp involving highly improbable events, impeccable timing, misunderstandings and mistaken identities.

Structured in three acts, the play’s first act introduces the cast and crew of Nothing On, the play within Noises Off. The night before opening, the actors are struggling to get their entrances and exits and innumerable plates of sardines in the right place at the right time. The late hour and increasing tensions begin to reveal the fraught interpersonal relationships between the characters. The first act leaves you wondering: will they get it right before opening night?

In a dramatic transformation of space, the second act of Noises Off takes place backstage during a midweek matinee of Nothing On. The show has been touring for a month and the actors’ dysfunctional relationships are starting to take their toll on the production.

The final act takes place during the closing night performance of Nothing On. The play and the characters’ relationships are barely holding together. Mishap after mishap piles up as the characters attempt to untangle the disastrous performance and arrive at some sort of rational, salvageable end.

"The most dexterously realized comedy ever about putting on a comedy. A spectacularly funny, peerless backstage farce. This dizzy, well-known romp is festival of delirium."

The New York Times

"Bumper car brilliance...If laughter is indeed the best medicine, Noises Off is worth its weight." New York Daily News

“It’s just pure hilarity from start to finish. Whoever you are, wherever you come from, the play’s goal is to make you laugh, and laugh, and laugh.”

- Meredith McDonough, Associate Artistic Director,

Actors Theatre of Louisville

Hope you guys are enjoying the first week of summer! 👌👌👌

Now that you've guys had a small break, it's time for HOMECOMING PAINTING. Attached below is the homecoming schedule for the rest of June.

All of the sessions this month will be at Jennifer's house from 11 AM - 4 PM. (Some sessions may either end a little earlier or run a little later depending on how much we get done that day) Ask any officer for my address. Feel free to bring food or friends from other schools! 😜😜😜

[Officers: Jennifer Lai, Jaria Jaug, Elyse Nguyen, Shayanna Gatchalian, Vivian Le, Larissa Gomez]

DISCLAIMER: For the next couple of sessions, we will mostly be cutting paper and sketching murals. So yes! @artists PLS COME!!! BUT even if you think you can't sketch, come to help cut our crazii long paper! Trust me, we'll need a lot of help even just cutting paper for the ENTIRE HALLS.✨✨✨

Remember that this is our absolutely last homecoming, and these will be the last halls we'd have put our blood, sweat, and tears into. So I hope to see all you ALMOST-SENIORS around for the rest of the homecoming paintings this summer! (even yall who don't get involved in class much, I hope you guys begin to participate a BUNCH this year!)

It's senior year baby 😜, so let's go ALL OUT!✊

Hello!

I'm missing a VERY important WHITE box with things inside. I left it at the rally LAST FRIDAY in the BIG GYM. The outside of the box says "GILDAN." Inside contained a frying pan, a yellow FANTASTICS shirt,  a big blue book (it was a SCRAPBOOK with BABY PHOTOS inside). If anyone has seen the box or knows anything about where that box may be please loopmail me as soon as possible.

If P.E. teachers or any custodians have placed this box any after the rally, please let me know where I can find the box. It's really important that I return these items to all the people that I borrowed it from, especially the SCRAPBOOK of memories and yellow Fantastics shirt.

Hey innovators! I'm Jocelyn and I was a Summer Intern at Camp Galileo Sunnyvale last summer. It was an insane yet super insightful heck of a ride, and I'd love for you to experience it this upcoming summer.

WHAT is Camp Galileo: A science, art, and outdoor-activity summer camp for K-5 that focuses on establishing problem-solving and innovative mindsets in kids. (Galileo also has a program called Camp Galileo Summer Quest for 6-8 that needs Summer Interns as well.) The whole organization is amazing but too much for one post so learn more about their mission statement here.

WHAT the job entails: The Summer Intern interacts with kids, organizes, collaborates, supports, and more. S/he's basically the jack-of-all-trades that supports the rest of the staff. But most of all, the s/he is a student, just as you are now, as the job consists of hands-on learning of both tangible and intangible skills, from hot-glue-gun mastery to professionalism and quick problem-solving.

WHO's eligible: Gotta be 16 or over!! Anyone who's down to have an incredible summer honestly. You don't need to be someone who's looking to major in education or science; I learned many leadership and management skills here that can be applied in any field.

WHERE is Galileo: They've got locations all around the Bay Area (even SoCal and Chicago if that's where you'll be this summer). A list of them is on the website linked at the end of this post.

WHEN is Galileo: The camp runs for a majority of the summer, but you don't need to commit to all the weeks. You can just apply for the weeks you'll be available.

HOW to apply: The app is out now! There is an online portion (including a resumé to submit, essay questions, and a reference form), phone interview or video submission, then in-person interview. Apply early because they accept on a rolling basis.

On the fence? Take my advice and don't hold back from applying! I was definitely nervous starting out, as this was my very first job. But the co-workers are so down to help and support and teach the ropes. Camp Galileo does a great job at building a positive environment and making the summer enjoyable for not just the campers, but the staff as well. Being around kids all day definitely got exhausting at times, but looking back, the confidence and growth (and not to mention $) earned were so worth. There was not one dull moment at camp, and some of my co-workers are my great friends today. GO FOR IT. "You have nothing to lose and everything to gain."

Got questions about the job, wanna hear more of my personal experiences, or still need more push to apply? Totally feel free to message me on Facebook (Jocelyn Su), Loopmail me, or just see me in person. I'd also totally appreciate it if you mention that I (Jocelyn Su) referred you when you apply! :~) Good luck!

Summer reading will consist of two titles:

  • Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything
  • Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother

For each title, you will be asked to complete summer homework and take a test your first day(s) back from vacation. This is your 2nd warning (1st being at AP night): there are absolutely NO exceptions for having failed to complete summer reading, so please come to school next year prepared!

The following set of questions will need to be completed for BOTH titles (summer reading homework):

AP Lang Summer Homework Worksheet

Most answers must be supported with SPECIFIC EXAMPLES from book and provide in-depth explanations in order to get CREDIT! You will complete 2 of these worksheets: one for each book.

1.  Explain how the author(s) establish their credibility on the subject matter they are writing about.

2.  What is the main topic of the book?

3.  For which audience is this book intended?

4.  Explain whether the writing is objective or subjective.

5.  Explain what the author could have done to improve his/her argument OR explain the strongest point the author makes in convincing the reader of his or her argument.

6.  Explain a positive way in which this book could alter society.

7.  What is the most important final comment you wish to make about the book? Do you have any suggestions for the direction for future research in the area? What has reading this book done for your or demonstrated to you?

BYE BYE BIRDIE is an endearing, sweet musical. It tells the story of a rock-n-roll singer who is enlisted into the army in the 1950’s. His agent Albert Peterson and secretary Rose Alvarez, plan one last publicity campaign before he enlists: pick a random fan from across the country to sing his new song to and offer her “one last kiss” before entering the army.

The girl chosen is none other than Kim MacAfee, president of the Conrad Birdie fan club and resident of Sweet Apple, Ohio. Normally Kim would be ecstatic to get this attention. However, she has just been pinned to her crush Hugo, and now she’s in a bind: does she go ahead with the kiss of her long-time celebrity crush Conrad or stay true to her new steady, Hugo? What happens to the teenagers and citizens of quiet Sweet Apple when this Elvis-inspired rock star arrives with TV crews?  This light-hearted musical comedy made songs such as “Put on a Happy Face,” “Kids,” “The Telephone Hour,” “An English Teacher,” and “A Lot of Living To Do,” instant standards.

We are in danger of losing AP Music Theory this upcoming year if we do not add another 12 students by Monday!

FAQ

"My classes are full!"

Your next school year courses should be all planned, but look at your electives and ask "Do I want to be in this class for another 180 School Days?", if not join AP Music Theory!

"I'm not Musically trained!"

It is required for you to know the basics of reading music, but once the basics are set you are ready to join! Summer vacation will be ample time for you to learn the basics. It all depends if you want to know too the universal language of music!

"Why should I take a AP Music course over a AP Math or Science course?"

STEM related AP courses are popular and also very rigorous, but if your are tired of Math and Science and want to try a different type of challenge then AP Music Theory is a challenge for you!

"STEM related AP course will make me look like a more qualified student for UCs and CSUs"

Yeah you are right, but UCs and CSUs look for those students that stand out as well! Be part of the first batch of AP Music Theory students here in PHHS, that will make UCs and CSUs look twice!

"AP Music theory sounds difficult! What is it about?"

AP Music theory is going to be difficult, but any AP course will test you. In short, you are going to develop your aural, written, compositional, and analytical skills through a series of listening, performance, written, creative, and analytical exercises. This is an ideal class for those songwriters and musicians out there!

"I'm not really into music...so I'm not going to sign up for it okay?"

That's perfectly fine. AP Music Theory is looking for people who are going to enjoy being there!

"Okay I'm sold! How do I sign up?"

Look for a course change form at the office or on the PHHS site and have everything filled out by Monday 3/14/16!

If you're still unsure about sign up then contact me and I will convince you or if you have questions be sure to ask me!

OCCUPATION MURDER: By Billy St. John

Who would suspect that before the live telecast is over for the TV quizshow "It's a Living!" the hardest problem to solve would be, "Who killed Tony Fabrizi, the show's sponsor?" And why was he murdered? Was it for the now missing diamond bracelet he had brought for the commercial, or was he shot for personal reasons? Homicide detective Lt. Jim Slate, along with Amanda Maxwell, a little old lady amateur sleuth, discover that most of the TV show's cast had motives to murder the man - including his Italian wife with a fiery temper. Rounds of the fictional game show are actually played during the performance using members of the audience on stage as contestants.

Dear Students,

If you want approval from the administration to attend Walden West as a cabin leader this school year, the following guidelines must be met:

1) Your request should be submitted to Ms. Ng at least five (5) school days in advance. This means you should ask for permission a whole week before the week that you plan to go to Walden West.

2) You should not have any D's or F's as grades.

3) You should not have excessive absences, cuts, or tardies.

If the above requirements are not met, your request will not be approved.  Please note that I am only able to give approval to 5 students to attend Walden West per week (this will be on a first come first serve basis, as determined by who completes their paperwork and brings it to me first).

If you meet the above requirements, please come to the attendance office a week BEFORE your first day at Walden West to pick up a short term independent studies contract so that you can be excused from school.

Thank You.

P.S. I do not have the actual Walden West application. Please visit their website on your own to find information as to how you can apply.

Join the Piedmont Hills Cycling Club!

We ride not only to let go of the stresses of school, but also to push ourselves to the limits. One week will be a 10 mph leisure pace to tour Fremont, the next might be a climb up Sierra Road, ranked a Category 2 hill (the second to steepest climb type). That's 2,000 calories in 2 hours.

Bike riding is a sport: there are ways to ride better (and faster). That's why PHHS Cycling plans to provide skills presentations during our weekly lunch meetings.

Our first meeting is next Thursday (Sept. 10) in B-9 at lunch. It will be an overview of the club, as well as a sort of ice breaker for everyone to get to know each other. We'll also decide when our first group ride will be.

Our weekly meetings will also be on Thursdays in B-9 (Tippetts's room) at lunch.

What is Senioritis?

Senioritis is a "disease" that is a supposed affliction of students in their final year of high school or college, characterized by a decline in motivation or performance. Most cases of senioritis tend to start after college applications and mid-year reports have been sent in. Senioritis has been documented in a significant minority of seniors usually at the end of the 4th quarter of the junior year.

Help us prove if this manifesting disease is real by taking this extremely fast survey that'll take you less than 2mins! Please log into a google account first to take the survey. (This action was taken to ensure only one submission per person).

Dear Piedmont Hills community,

As a school, we currently have a goal of reducing our water use by 30% and we need YOUR help!

We are currently using the following strategies to reach our goal of water reduction:

  • Reduce landscape irrigation to only twice a week.
  • Observe water meter spin rate to better understand daily usage.
  • Monthly assessment and monitoring of water use.
  • Fix leaks in a timely manner.

What can YOU do to help?

  • Inform the school if you notice leaks around our campus.
  • Report any excess water usage that you might notice.
  • Send us your water reduction ideas!

Thank you!

The summer session begins Monday, June 15 and ends on Friday, July 17.  Friday, July 3 is a holiday.

Classes begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 1:15 pm.  First semester dates are June 15 -June 30 and second semester dates are July 1-July 17.  Unless your child is making up just one semester, most students will attend the entire five weeks. (These dates/times do NOT pertain to the incoming freshmen – summer bridge program)

Excellent attendance is critical to the success of your child. Each day of summer school is equal to six regular school days. If a student misses more than one day, he/she may be withdrawn. It is also important that your child arrives on time.  Three tardies will equate to one absence and the above rules will apply. Also, any student who is not present in class on the first day of summer school will be withdrawn. NO EXCEPTIONS.

The link to those students who have been accepted into summer school is located on the PHHS home page to the right side under “Students.”

If your child is no longer planning on attending summer school, please notify me immediately at pereirad@esuhsd.org as we have an extensive waiting list.  If you are on the waiting list, order of preference will be given by grade level as well as when application was submitted.  Students on wait list may be contacted prior to Summer School Starting but those that aren’t should plan to be outside the Summer School office located in E-4 by 8:45 on Monday June 15 unless you only want to attend 2nd semester than you would arrive at 8:45 on July 1st.  If student do not show up the first day of each semester, there still may be room to add you.

All regular year school rules apply during summer school. Smoking, electronic devices and hats are not allowed on campus. To help ensure student safety, students will not be permitted to wear gang affiliated clothing. Violation of the previously stated rules, habitual tardiness, poor behavior, insubordination or violations of the closed campus rule are all grounds for dismissal from Summer School. Please keep in mind summer school is a privilege and not a right.

Please review the student handbook located on our home page under “Students” on the top vertical menu.

Hello Pirates!

On Saturday March 21 from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm we will be holding our ADA recovery day.  The program is an opportunity for students to get extra help and attention from their teachers in a given subject and it also helps the school recover valuable ADA dollars that help fund the school. Teachers can offer tutoring, test prep or give students extra time and assistance with projects.  Students that have at least one full day absence will be invited to attend.  If you have any questions or you are interested in participating  please contact Mr. Ewers.  Thank you for all of you support..

Dear fellow Piedmont Hills High School students,

For 49 years, The Legend has been a beloved messenger to the students of Piedmont Hills High School. Today, however, we are greatly shocked and disheartened to bring you sad news: the news, laughs, opinions, and advice that The Legend provides to Piedmont will all come to an end next year.

Out of a minimum of 30 students needed to keep the Legend alive, only 17 have shown their interest to be part of next year’s staff, 13 fewer than the required amount. If we do not reach this number, simply put, The Legend will cease to exist for its 50th anniversary.

The Legend is and always has been an important tradition of Piedmont Hills. The paper provides information and knowledge to its readers, and invaluable skills and memories to those who produce it. Since the 1960s, the Journalism staff have shaped the newspaper into a stage for school events, international news, heartfelt opinions, and, more recently, a platform for debate and discourse among students and teachers.

Without your help, this tradition will disappear. Please join the effort to save Journalism at Piedmont Hills by enrolling in the class, or encouraging others to enroll. You may still talk to the counselors and ask to change your electives. If you have any questions regarding the class, please contact us in person, at phlegend@gmail.com, or through our Facebook page. If you would like to find out more about the Journalism experience, please refer to these articles featured in the latest issue. (http://phhsthelegend.org/…/01/30/journalism-a-day-in-the-l…/ and http://phhsthelegend.org/…/…/join-journalism-we-have-issues/)

In this day and age, when so many must fight for the simple right to be heard in their society, we cannot allow our own voices fade away as the result of our apathy. We hope that you may help The Legend see its 50th birthday.

Sincerely,
The Legend Staff 2014-2015

Are you against slavery?

Are you a humanitarian?

Are you for the freedom and security of humans?

IF YOU SAID [[[YES]]] TO ANY OF THE QUESTIONS ABOVE, MAKE SURE TO CHECK OUT LIGHTS ON TRAFFICKING! Meetings are every Tuesday in Mrs. James's room, P-15!

Lights on Trafficking is a club that both raises awareness for and fights modern-day slavery, otherwise known as human trafficking.

Human trafficking is a serious crime and a grave violation of human rights. Every year, thousands of men, women and children fall into the hands of traffickers, in their own countries and abroad. Almost every country in the world is affected by trafficking, whether as a country of origin, transit or destination for victims.

Our mission is to make it known that slavery is not just an occurrence of the past - it is all around us. We aim to "shine a light" on this topic. Many people are only faintly aware of modern-day slavery, and we aim to change that.

First meeting in F-10 at lunch on September 7, 2014!

Bonjour! Welcome to the Piedmont Hills High French Club. The French Club is a place where you can not only learn French culture, but live it! We take our members beyond the textbooks filled with nouns and verbs - we go for the full hands-on experience.
This year, the French Club will also be touching on many other surrounding cultures, such as those of the Spanish, Greek, Italian, German, English, Swiss, and Bulgarian. We will be making many trips around the Bay Area to watch films, appreciate foods from different cultures, visit cultural fairs, and celebrate foreign holidays. We hope that this club can be a place where you will find inspiration and even share your own cultural traditions!

Join the Piedmont Hills Cycling Club!

We ride not only to let go of the stresses of school, but also to push our bodies to the limits. One week will be a 10 mph leisure pace to tour Fremont, the next might be a climb up Sierra Road, ranked as a Category 2 hill (the second to steepest climb type). That's 2,000 calories in 2 hours.

Bike riding is a sport: there are ways to ride better (and faster). That's why PHHS Cycling provides skill presentations during our weekly lunch meetings.

Our first meeting is next Thursday (Sept. 11) in B-9 at lunch. It will be an overview of the club, as well as a sort of ice breaker for everyone to get to know each other. We'll also decide when our first group ride will be.

Our weekly meetings will also be on Thursdays in B-9 (Tippetts's room) at lunch.

If you happen to have any questions, please contact one of the officers:

  • Winter season - Christmas DIY wreaths and statement beanies.

General meetings will also be at the same location as our first meeting:

Ms. Smith's room, F-8. Located in the Senior Hall.

****Our meetings are EVERY OTHER WEEK.***

1.      Read the three novels below and be prepared to take tests on them on the first day of school.  Your test scores will count as an important part of your fall semester grade.  Students who have not read the novels by the first day of school will likely earn an F for the first grading period and will often struggle to earn a grade above a C for the semester.  Also keep in mind that the test responses will need to be based on the novels, not the film adaptations.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

Be thoroughly familiar with plots, setting, characterizations, and themes of these novels. (Please keep in mind that theme is not the topic or the subject, theme is the author’s statement about the topic or subject.) Also think about the tone of each novel (especially the attitude of each author towards the society he or she is describing). Please note that tone is not the same as atmosphere.  A horror film might have a gloomy or scary atmosphere, but the director’s tone toward the society (or characters or situation) might be patronizing, scornful, moralistic, etc.

  1. At the bottom of this sheet is a list of characters and terms from Brave New World.  Be sure you can identify each of them.
  2. After reading Huckleberry Finn, write your reading/study notes on it, following the directions on the instruction sheet (see back, or below if reading online).  Be prepared to turn in the Huckleberry Finn Reading Notes on the first day of school.  Also, keep an electronic copy of your notes as you will be required to submit them to Turnitin.com once the school year has started.  (You will be required to do the same exercise for the other two novels after the school year starts, so you might want to take/keep informal notes as you read.)  Please keep in mind: former students’ reading notes are archived at Turnitin.com; should your notes be too similar to another student’s—current or former—notes, your notes will receive no credit.

I look forward to working with you next fall as we examine some of the major classics of world literature.  If you have any specific questions about the reading, please visit me in F-6.

Mr. Brown

AP Literature & Composition Reading Notes for Major Works

Purpose:  Preparation and review for class essays and projects and for the “open question” on the AP Literature and Composition Exam, given in May.

Directions:  For each major work we read this year, make notes that include the items listed below.  Please organize and identify the information as shown. (Please do not type the instructions on your notes.)

Be sure these notes are in your own words and are based on your own thinking and analysis.  Notes that appear to be based on outside printed or electronic sources or that are substantially the same as another student’s will not be accepted.  (We want you to have the experience of really thinking about and analyzing these works for yourself.)

These notes will be turned in separately for each major reading assignment and returned to you for filing so that they will be available to you when you do your final review for the AP exam.

  1. Title, author, date the work was originally published, period/era of literature into which it falls, genre (e.g.: Classic Tragedy, Tragic Drama, Comedy of Errors, Picaresque novel, Bildungsroman, Comedy of Manners).  You may look up this information, but be sure you understand what the terms mean.
  2. Setting(s), both time and place, including a list of place names and their significance or symbolism, if any.  Please note: setting is not period/era of the literature (e.g.: The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is set in 14th Century Verona, but it belongs to the English Renaissance period.)
  3. Plot (Give page numbers if you will have access to the book later when you do your final review.)
    1. List of major events, scenes, speeches / conversations.  (This should be one page at the very most.)
    2. Mention any special plot features, such as flashbacks, subplots, etc.
    3. Briefly state the significance of the title and of the opening and closing scenes of the book.
  4. Characters, a list of significant characters, explaining briefly who they are, their character traits, and their significance in terms of plot, symbolism, theme, etc.  (Be sure you spell their names correctly.)
  5. Point of view, such as 1st person, 3rd person limited, etc., and why that narrative voice is effective for this particular work.   Research the various types of point of view if you are not familiar with them.  (Does not apply to plays.)*  *Unless written with a “Stage Manager” narrative voice.
  6. Tone and style of the author.  Explain the author’s tone and style or writing, and then explain how the particular tone and style contribute to the meaning of the novel.  (We will explore these concepts more in depth once the year starts.) Separate these into at least two separate paragraphs: one for tone and one for style.  Be sure to explore the author’s use of language and syntax as part of your discussion of style. In addition to the items mentioned there, if a work includes major motifs or patterns (these might be repeated symbols, images, metaphors, colors, etc.) briefly explain these.  This is a critical aspect of insightfully analyzing literature; in any AP essay, you will need to be able to write about the technical, structural, and stylistic strategies of the piece and how these elements contribute to its meaning.
  7. Theme(s) and the author’s purpose for writing. Explain such things as why the book was written, any social political or philosophical agenda the author may have, and what insights into society or human nature the book offers.  (Any AP essay is likely to require you to connect your analysis to these larger questions, so do some serious thinking about these issues, and then state your ideas in these notes in enough detail that they will be helpful to you later.)
  8. List of major short, significant quotations.  Include page numbers for novels; act, scene, and line numbers for dramas; and names of speakers if the quotations come from dialogue.  (It can be impressive to use or allude to these in your essays.  Memorize a few!)
  9. Vocabulary.  List and define at least ten words the author uses that are unfamiliar to you.  These can be words that you don’t know at all, or words that are used in a manner different from what you are accustomed.  Do not choose words that are clearly slang, simply a dialect pronunciation, or jargon the author has made up for the work.

Earn college and high school credit this summer for FREE!!! Classes offered at SJSU.  Here is everything you need to know:

What is the Mineta Transportation Institute?

The Mineta Transportation Institute (MTI), located at San Jose State University,  is a national transportation policy studies organization established by Congress in 1991.  MTI was created to identify through research, to teach through graduate education and certification programs, and to disseminate publicly the best transportation practices in use throughout the world.  MTI is affiliated with the College of Business and is centered on three primary responsibilities:  (a) research, (b) security, and (c) education.  MTI, in partnership with San Jose State University, offers an accredited California State University Master of Science in Transportation Management and transportation-related graduate certificates.  MTI also offers a Summer Institute for high school students and the Garrett Morgan Sustainable Transportation Competition for middle school students.

Dates and times of the Summer Institute?

The Summer Institute will be held June 30 – July 25, 2014 Monday-Thursday, 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

What activities are included in the Summer Institute?

The Institute curriculum exposes students to key components of scientific inquiry using new frontiers in some of the major transportation-related topics of the day, and gives them an opportunity to see firsthand “behind the scenes” operations of major Bay Area transportation sites and agencies such as the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, BART, SamTrans, the San Jose traffic control center, and the Port of Oakland.

The Institute features a college-level course in Environmental Science with a special emphasis on STEM-related transportation issues.  This course will meet three times a week for three hours and will include written policy papers, midterms, and a final.  Students will receive 3 units of university credit.  Students may also request at their local school site the equivalent of 10 high school units.

How can I apply?

Complete an application and fax it to Shelby Tran, (408) 347-5245.  The application is a competitive scholarship application and upon acceptance notification constitutes a commitment to participate in the program.

What do I need to provide for the Institute?

Students will be responsible for their own transportation to the San Jose State campus and will need to provide their own lunch and snacks each day.  Books and materials will be provided by the Institute.
