About me

Background

09/19/18

I love my job.  I've been a teacher for 28 years and had the great fortune of being a Pirate for all of them (a welcome change of a childhood marked by frequent school changes).  I did fight becoming a teacher in the beginning for a couple of reasons that fell apart after I had the opportunity to work in a classroom in Kenya.  Now my blood runs maroon.

I love the energy of students and the interaction with them.  I believe a good classroom experience is based on the relationship between students and teacher, and I do what I can to create a safe, responsive space for my students.   I teach English because I became fascinated by the writing process in a college course. I believed then, as now, that by teaching and practicing the writing process, we become better thinkers and communicators.  We get smarter by writing.

I got my BA in Communications from Lewis and Clark College (ask me about LC!  I love that college!) and my teaching credential from San Francisco State University.  I have done extra coursework in literature and writing at San Jose State, and been trained and worked as a literacy and instructional coach.

I grew up in Palo Alto and currently live in San Jose with my two children who are in college.  When I'm not grading essays, I like to hike, bike, and hang out with my beloved family and friends.
