Climate change is a hot topic in the news today, with people on both sides of the debate. Since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, humans have been pumping more and more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Many scientists and climatologists believe that an increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will start to bring up Earth’s average temperatures.

 

Mission Briefing

The local mayor is running for reelection and looking to increase the number of voters. He wants to focus on climate change in California. Your job as the campaign manager is to create a campaign ad to show how humans are affecting climate change and the negative impacts of this on biodiversity.

● What causes changes in ecosystems that ultimately affect populations?

● What are the changes that are happening in the climate, and what effects are those having on life?

● How are human activities impacting Earth’s systems, and how does that affect life on Earth?

● What can humans do to mitigate their negative impact on the environment?

 

General Requirements

  1. Work in a group of 1-4 students

  2. Start a Google Slide. Include the names and title in the first page of the Google Slide

  3. Collect your research in Google Slide

  4. Present your research on a white poster board

  5. Include a picture of the poster board as the last page of the Google Slide

  6. Download the Google Slide as PDF

  7. Each student submits work device with the PDF to this assignment in School Loop

  8. Present to the class

Detailed Requirements

❏ In what ways are humans damaging Earth?

❏ Why is it important that humans sustain biodiversity?

❏ In what ways are humans damaging ecosystems specifically in California?

❏ What are ways that humans can reduce their impact on ecosystems?

❏ What is the importance of using climate models?

❏ How is Earth being modified due to climate change?

❏ Climate change is believed to be caused by an increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. What human activities directly increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere?

❏ What threats does California face with climate change?

❏ About 80% of California’s freshwater comes from the snowpack in the Sierra Nevada mountains. What would you expect the impact of increased global temperatures would be on California’s availability of freshwater?

❏ At least three pictures

❏ Answer the following guiding questions:

● What causes changes in ecosystems that ultimately affect populations?

● What are the changes that are happening in the climate, and what effects are those having on life?

● How are human activities impacting Earth’s systems, and how does that affect life on Earth?

The increased acidity in our world’s oceans is threatening marine life, especially young oysters and other shellfish. In areas with high levels of acidity, the shells and skeletons of shellfish are completely dissolving. Why is this?

 

Mission Briefing

You are a concerned fisherman who must create a webinar for your restaurant vendors. The webinar must explain the increased cost of oysters and other shellfish due to the effects of the increased acidity levels on their shells and skeletons. In the webinar, you should educate owners on the acidification of the oceans and propose a method to conserve oysters and other shellfish in extreme acidic regions of the ocean.

● How can you predict the relative quantities of products in a chemical reaction?

CO2(aq) + CO32-(aq) + H2O ⇋ 2HCO3-(aq)

How would additional carbon dioxide impact the equilibrium? How would this shift in the equilibrium impact the shells and skeletons of marine life?

❏ What changes would you expect to see in the carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere if the temperature of the ocean were to decrease?

❏ Which human activities are increasing the carbon in Earth’s atmosphere and affecting the environment?

❏ How are models used to address the future outcomes of human impacts?

❏ Include at least three pictures in the poster

❏ Answer the following guiding questions:

● How can you alter chemical equilibrium and reaction rates?

● How can you predict the relative quantities of products in a chemical reaction

❏ Discuss how human impacts on the acidification of the ocean, with a focus on the cause and possible solutions to these impacts.

I am excited to be a science teacher at PHHS because science has the ability to transform people's life. PHHS offers a good learning and working environment for the students and teachers.
